You Don't Know What You've Got Until Its Gone

You ever been in a relationship and you did not appreciate the person you were with until they were no longer there?  There was a song that came out I can remember who sung it but it was a lady with some dreadlocks sitting in back of a car singing, "You Don't Know What You've Got Until Its Gone."  Most of the time we think of this concept in the context of relationships but this is not always the case.  For example, you ever had a car and the freedom to go wherever you wanted to go and then your car breaks down for a few days?  You could then testify that you don't know what you've got until its gone.  Another example, have you ever had a family member whom you were close to die?  No matter how well you knew the person the full impact that person had on your life could not be measured until that person was no longer in your life.  Why is that? Simple because you don't know what you've got until its gone.

Still there?  Still marinating on Sunday's message!  Often times it only when we walk away from God that we can to truly appreciate how AWESOME, EXCELLENT, LOVING, CARING, COMPASSIONATE, GRACIOUS, FORGIVING, WISE, UNDERSTANDING etc. GOD is.  Go ahead and tell the truth about it was only when you walked away from God that you truly came to understand this concept.  We learn that the first step was to admit we had left God.  The next step was to seek after God.  How many of you like the Psalmist can say as the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

We are all familiar with the familiar line from the story of Snow White.  It goes mirror mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?  The Queen would often ask the mirror that question.  Now fairest is translated beautiful.  For seven years the Queen asked the mirror the same question, "mirror mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?" The mirror (who is personified in the narrative) would respond you are and the Queen was pleased.  Isn't that just like us as long as people tell us the response we want to hear all is well?  It strokes our ego and validates our self-centered desires.

The story continues that when Snow White became seven years old she was the fairest of them all.  So when the Queen asked mirror mirror on the Wall who is the fairest of them all?  The mirror responded, "Snow White." The narrative continues that the Queen became jealous and sent a huntsman to kill Snow White.  Isn't that just like us as soon as people don't give us the response we want to hear we react harshly.  We often send words to murder their character.

How will you respond we you mirror of affirmation gives you a response you are not fond of?  The Bible says in Titus 3:2 that we are to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

Soul Survivor

Young Jeezy recorded a track featuring Akon entitled "Soul Survivor."  In the track Jeezy who claims to be the heart of the streets tells the story of his life as a hustler.  He shares about his struggles about the highs and lows of the dope game.  He comes to the conclusion that he is a Soul Survivor.

This past Sunday's message was entitled, "My Worship Is For Real," it covered Luke 1:46-56 it as affectionately known by many as Mary's Song. Mary says in the verse 46 that my souls magnifies the Lord!  She is effectively saying that in light of your care Lord I am a Soul Survivor!  Mary is also saying in light of your mercy towards Israel in other words your ultimate deliverance of Israel my soul magnifies the Lord.  Mary says that because of you Lord I can be a Soul Survivor!

What does your soul magnify?  Does it like Young Jeezy the things of this world or does it like Mary the light of the world?

The Pie Nobody Wants To Eat: Humble Pie

What's your favorite pie?  Is it the infamous sweet potato pie?  Is it the delicious apple pie?  Perhaps you like pecan pie?  No, I got it you like pumpkin pie?  This holiday season there will be millions of people partaking in one of the aforementioned pies and as good as they are they are not the pie the Lord desires for His people to eat.  That is not to say that the Lord is against you eating pies in moderation wink wink but it is to say that there is a desirable pie that you can eat as much as you want.  Humble pie!

Humble pie gets a bad rep because it usually happens as a result of an individual's boasting or being haughty and then they get a slice of humble pie to bring them back to reality.  However, this doesn't have to  be the case the Bible says humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time (NIV).

So this holiday season remember the pie that smells good to the LORD.  Will you have a slice?

The Art of Pre-Responding

Have you ever wonder why things happen the way they happen in your life?  You ask yourself why don't I ever get the promotion?  Why am I never found? Why can't I find the one?  Why don't the things I pray about come to past?  Might I suggest to you that it is because you are a reactionary individual opposed to a proactive individual?

A Reactionary individual praises God when the change comes vs. A Proactive individual who praises God while they are waiting for the change to come.

A Reactionary individual praises God when things are well vs. A Proactive individual who praises God when things are a mess trusting God can bless the mess.

Which one are you?  Are you a Reactionary individual or a Proactive individual?

Here is the key to becoming a pro-active individual. Pastor Donald Johnson suggest that the pro-active individual is the individual who responds to God's revelation opposed to God's manifestation!  That is to say it is the proactive individual who hears the Word of God responds with anticipatory faith acting as is the revelation is the manifestation!

God is watching your pre-response.  What kind of individual will he see?

The New Face of Slavery: Consumerism

There is a new form of slavery!  This time it has no respecterr person(s).  It doesn't care if you are Black, White, Hispanic, Asian etc.  As we approach this season where more people fall victim to what society markets as the times when dreams come true. You can find your dream vacation for supposedly pennies on the dollar.  You can find your dream electronics or dream vehicle at significantly reduced rates all to keep you in the bondage of consumerism.   Consumerism is the anti-contentment it focus is always to get get get.  This new form of slavery breeds discontentment and leads to the financial bondage of debt. For example, you can have all of your bills paid a blessing in within of itself but consumerism will make you discontent because you couldn't buy such and such a gift they won't even open.  So what do you  do become discontent rationalized in your mind that since it is on sale I will go ahead and buy such and such a gift and fall victim to consumerism.  You end finding yourself in financial hardship and your discontentment only worsens as you are unable to feed your desire to get get get.

The question becomes are you a slave or are you free?  Does your value come from things or does your value come from God?  Let's keep in mind the reason why we all exist and that is to GIVE and not to GET. So what do you have to give?  The transformative love of Jesus Christ and then and only then will you be able to be free of this bondage.

Gratefulness

Tis the season of thanksgiving.  Not to go all cliché on you but for the believer every day is a day of thanksgiving because every day is a gift from God.  The natural response when one receives a gift is to say thank you.  Now that we have all of the formalities out of the way I come to challenge you to embrace an attitude of gratitude.  You may be wondering why should I do such a thing?  Paul reveals to us and the church of Thessalonica that it is God's will for us to give thanks in everything!  The leper in Luke 17 reveals to us that gratitude moves us from healing to wholeness (in my Dr. Steve Bland voice).   Studies suggest that people who are grateful live longer and have lower cholesterol.  Not only is an attitude of gratitude the key to spiritually vitality but it is beneficial to your physical vitality.

Winston Churchill said, "attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference."  An attitude of gratitude can be the difference between life and death literally!  So what will you choose?  Will you choose gratefulness or will choose ungratefulness?  What you choose to embrace is what you will become:

Grateful people have joy vs. Ungrateful people are bitter.
Grateful people have peace vs. Ungrateful people are always worried about what isn't.
Grateful people exhibit love vs. Ungrateful people exhibit malice.

Can you see the difference?

Down Set Hut Hut

Down set hut hut is the infamous cadence before a quarterback receives the ball from the center to start the offensive play.  I am reading another one of those books that makes me disgruntle with myself. Mark Batterson in his book "Wild Goose Chase," suggests that many Christians live in a cage of fear.  That many of us are afraid to following the passions God place in our hearts.  In other words we live life on the defensive by playing it safe and sticking to what we know!  To play offense one must step out on faith!  They must snap the ball and run the play!  Playing offense is hard work and the road will not be easy because there is failure and uncertainty!  What's interesting is that the quarterback often takes the snap and goes backwards a few steps before he either he passes the ball forward, hands the ball off to a running back that then runs forward, or throws a pass forward to a receiver!  Romell McElroy I promised I just said something then.  What are you getting at Trell? Here it is sometimes in life you have to go backwards in order to go forward but you can't go anywhere unless you snap the ball.

So today get on the offensive step out on faith because you do know that without faith it is impossible to please God!

Expect The Great!

One of my favorite preachers Pastor Brian Carter of the Concord Church in Dallas, TX has a devotional out called, "Great Expectations."  One of my favorite artist Donald Lawrence made a song "Expect The Great."  Both are wonderful products that I encourage you to buy.  The Bible even says as a man thinketh so is he.  The Bible even says I know the plans I have for you a plan to prosper you not harm you plans to give hope and a future.

But what happens when you expect the great only to find you are dealt the hand of sorrow and grief.  What do you do then?  Are you supposed to be hopeful trusting that all things will work out for your good?  I will tell what I do.  In every circumstance I give thanks trusting that a GREAT GOD is able to take any circumstance as an opportunity chance to reveal His AWESOME power.

So you can also expect great pain, great grief, and great sorrow but don't forgive you have a GREAT GOD who will be there to heal your broken heart, and to wipe away every tear.

Hand In The Cookie Jar (The Art Of Forgiveness)

If you are like me there has been a time in your life where you have had your hand in the proverbial cookie jar.  In my case I had it in there literally and proverbially.  This adage normally refers to someone who is caught doing something they are not supposed to be doing.  Funny how often we seem to find ourselves in these situations. Here is what interesting about that when we are the ones who are caught with our hands in the proverbial cookie jar we expect forgiveness.  However, when we catch someone else with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar we seek in our mind what we consider justice.  God says the same mercy you would like extended unto you is the same mercy you are to extend to others.

So today who do you need to forgive?  Remember If you don't forgive your brothers and sisters of their trespasses neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive of your trespasses.

Hey Remember Me?

Hey remember me I am the woman whose family is all deceased with no one to visit me?

Hey remember me I am the man who lost everything as result of corporate greed and bad economic policy?

Hey remember me I am the single mother with four children who doesn't have a job and struggles to clothed and feed my children?

Hey remember me we are the family who lost everything when our house burn down and we have literally nothing?

Hey remember me I am the homeless man who is on corner while you throw away your left-overs?

Hey remember me I am the guy who made a dumb mistake when I was young and now I have been in prison for twenty years I guess it's what they say out of sight out of mind?

Jesus said that what you do to the least of them you have done it unto me!  Who will you remember today?

When The Pain Won't Go Away

Often times we ask God, "Lord Take The Pain Away."   God did promise to take the pain away once we reached glory not here on earth.  I know perhaps you have been told the contrary only to find that the pain continues to resurface!  Here is why because often times people fail to face the reality that scars are real!  Often times because we have the wrong image of the Cross!  You see at the cross where I first saw the light by the way Jesus Christ did the redemptive work that give us all an opportunity to be in right relationship with the Most High God.

You know the story they put a crown of thorns on his head, pierce him in the side, they nailed his hands and feet to the Cross.  He died and was resurrected on the third day according to the scriptures. Here is what we often tend to overlook the crucifixion was the most excruciating pain that any man has ever endured and in fact science suggest that no man could have possibly endure.  Jesus Christ when he was raised from dead still had the scars from the pain he endured!!

In my Pastor Edwards voice, "Come a little closer to me."  Resurrection Wounds is what Christ had!  A painful reminder of the love sacrifice he made for you and I.  What does that mean?  Here it is!  You have scars and Resurrection Wounds also from your previous life before Christ and the Resurrection Wounds after you came into the knowledge of the truth.  God never promise that there wouldn't be pain but God did promise to be there with you through the pain!  God like he gave Christ gives you the power to endure the pain! I gotta quit now because i gotta praise and I gotta get out.

Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places!

We all know the adage "looking for love in all the wrong places," and we all have fell victim to it at some time or another.  Whether it be from an unwilling parent, an unconcerned sibling, or a disinterested love interest we all know what's like to love someone who doesn't love us back. Then you went to church thinking surely I will find love there because God is love and these are God's people.  Only to experience church hurt and then you begin to ask the question that the Black Eye Peas asked, "Where Is Love?"

This morning I simply want to encourage you to set your affection on things above and you will find the LOVE that you so long for.  God is love and He demonstrated His love for us in this that while we were yet sinners He died for us.  For there is no greater love than this that a man lay down his life for a friend.  No longer do I call you servants for a servant does not know what his master wants but everything my Father has taught me I have taught you.  Therefore no longer do I call you servant but friend.  If you love me keep my commandments. Sorry almost got happy again!

Let me not leave you without telling you where to find love.  The Good Book says draw close unto God and God will come close to you.  Grandma said, "If you take one step God will take two."

Non-Factor

NBA Basketball Wives may be unbeknown to some of you.  It is a show that is produced by Shaunie O'Neal the ex-wife of Shaquile O'Neal.  Anyway during a heated argument between two of the cast members a phrase that has swept the nation was birth, "You Are A Non-Factor."  This phrase is given to any individual whom one does not deem essential to one's life.  As believers in the Way I am not promoting this type of behavior against any individual as the Book teaches that we war not against flesh and blood but against the spiritual force of evil.  There is however a spirit that is authored by The Devil you know the spirit that says things like:

  1. You can't make it.
  2. Go ahead and throw in the towel because nobody cares anyway.
So the next time you encounter one of those pessimistic, negative, and unfruitful spirits just say you are a Non-Factor in my life.

Love T.K.O.

In 1980 Teddy Pendergrass made a song entitled, "Love T.K.O." I know, I know I wasn't born yet so what do I know about that.  The classic hook goes I think I better let it go looks like another love T.K.O.  In this song he tells the story of love.  He shed some tears, he had taking some bumps and bruises, he had begun to lose his faith, and he tried to control love.  He had finally resolved that love wasn't worth it so he decided to let it go.

Many us have felt this way not only about love but about life I would like to encourage you this morning to never give up!  1 Corinthians 13 teaches us that love never fails, love is patient, love bears all things, love endures all things, and love believes all things!  In other words love is resilient and CANNOT be T.K.O.  The grave thought it had our Savior T.K.O. but when nothing else could help LOVE lifted Him! For God so LOVED the world that he gave His Son that LOVE could reign in our hearts forever!  Let me quit I have type myself happy!

Step By Step

One of my favorite shows as a child was "Step By Step" it came on right after another one of my favorite shows entitled, "Family Matters."  The theme song would go step by step day by day.  Then this past week the message and the teaching illuminated a word called Ebenezer which literally means God is with you every step of the way or as I like to say step by step.  In fact the writer of the Psalms indicates that a good man steps are ordered by the LORD. So, remember that no matter what may come your way God is with you step by step and day by day.

All I Need

Mary J. Blige and Method Man collaborated to make the classic record, "All I Need."  The record goes:

Like sweet morning dew
I took one look at you
And it was plain to see
You were my destiny
With you I'll spend my time
I'll dedicate my life
I'll sacrifice for you
Dedicate my life for you
What if Jesus was the object of our affection?  What if we made up in our minds that all we need is Jesus! The lyrics of the song don't even need to be changed just the object of the affection. Ultimately that's all Jesus wants a relationship with you!  Jesus wants to be the objection of your affection, to be your destiny, for you to dedicate your life to Him, for you to sacrifice for Him, and for you to spend time with Him.

I-God (Steve Jobs Tribute)

Recently the man responsible for the i-pod, i-pad, and i-phone passed away.  This teaches us that no matter how creative and no matter how much one can change the face of an industry they are fickle and only human.  His products however where known for their unique features and endless applications. Then I begin to think about the Creator God and all of God's features.  I begin to think about the Word of God and the endless applications it has for the life of the believer!  I soon discovered the greatest I of them all  was the I-God but unlike the i-pod, i-pad, or the i-phone the I-God wasn't created by man the I-God created man!  The I-God has several features some of which I will list below:

  1. The I-God is merciful and his mercy endures forever.
  2. The I-God is loving and we love him because he first loved us.
  3. The I-God is generous and he who gave his son will not withhold anything from us.
The i-pod, i-pad, and i-phone changed an industry but the I-God can change your destiny, your situation, your attitude, your thinking, and the world!  So remember in the midst of this age of rapid growing technology not to forget the God who allows it to be.

Let Me Be Your Motivation

Kelly Rowland and Dwayne Carter recently released a smash hit entitled, "Motivation." The premise of the song is that the female will encourage the male to perform at his peak. The female uses the words "Go, Go, Go."  I was thinking what if the Church would pick up on that concept. What if each member of the body of Christ decided to be someone's motivation?  What would the world look like?  What if we decided to motivate someone to GO out and share their faith.  What if we decided to motivate someone to GO out and visit the sick.  What if we decided to motivate someone to be the best servant of Christ they can be.  What if we decided to motivate someone to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. When was the last time you decided to be someone's motivation?  Today make it a priority to be someone's motivation!  Go, Go, Go!

Whatever You Are Be A Good One

Abraham Lincoln said, "Whatever you are be a good one."  This morning that is the simple exhortation whatever you are be a good one.  If you are a teacher be a good one.  If you are a encourager be a good one.  If you are a helper be a good one.  If you are servant be a good one.  If you are leader be a good one.  If you are a follower be a good one.  If you are a Christian be a good one.  If you are a praiser be a good one. If you are a worshiper be a good one.  Whatever you are be a good one!

Great Taste Less Filling

In this world where every five minutes you see Jennifer Hudson promoting "Weight Watchers" or Dan Marino promoting "Nutri-System" the pressure to look good is enormous.  Many people find themselves depressed because they are not the size that the world tells them they should be.  Ironically this leads most people to eat more only to find themselves more depressed.   This is one of the subtle ways that the Adversary works he plants an image in our minds and torments our minds as we try to pursue the image.

Here is the good news God always provides a way of escape. Miller Lite has an interesting slogan, "Great Taste Less Filling."  The claim is you don't have to sacrifice great taste because of fewer calories.  Here is my claim for this morning the Word of God is even better than Miller Lite as you can eat much delicious meat and drink as much milk as you want and the best part about it is that is Fat Free!

Press On

Adoniram Judson is remembered as the Apostle to Burma.  He responded to the Great Commission in a resounding way.  He felt that God had called him to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Burma also known as Myanmar.   He suffered many setbacks in his travels he lost children, wives, and his health failed him on several occasions.  He had every reason not to PRESS ON, but he continued because he had a desire to see the Burmese people have a Bible in their own language.  You see he had to forget about his past the many setbacks (the bad) and even that first Burmese person who accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ (the good).  He had to Press ON.   His strength to PRESS ON came from his intimate relationship with Jesus Christ even when he was imprisoned for sharing the Gospel he had memorized scriptures and translated them in his head and would share with his fellow inmates.   He like Paul had a desire to know Christ perfectly and to share that desire with the world.

What’s keeping you from PRESSING ON?  Let us like Paul PRESS ON, Like Mr. Judson PRESS ON, but ultimately like Jesus Christ who PRESSED ON by Golgotha Hill’s on up to Calvary’s Mountain he PRESSED ON passed death on up to resurrection, he PRESSED ON passed earth on up to heaven, He PRESSED ON past condemnation and onto forgiveness, he PRESSED ON past disobedience onto obedience, and PRESSED ON passed condemnation onto salvation!

Stuck On Stupid

The adage, "Stuck On Stupid," usually refers to an individual who does things that doesn't make any sense repeatedly.  For example, you keep giving that guy chance after chance even though he continually breaks your heart and your girlfriends say girl you must be Stuck On Stupid.  Or you keep lending that individual money who fails to pay you back and your significant other says you must be Stuck On Stupid.  The prophet Forrest Gump says," Stupid is as Stupid does."  Question becomes what are you stuck on?

Jeremiah 5:21 literally talks about a time in the history of the nation of Israel where God ask His people are you Stuck on Stupid?  The Israelites refused to worship Yahweh or obey his commands. They behave as people who did not know God or fear God.  Question becomes how are you behaving?  Does your life suggest that you are a child of the Living God?

It's stupid not to trust God when He has made a way out of no way time after time.  It's stupid not trust God when He has shown his provision time after time.  It's stupid not to trust God when He has kept you out of harm's way time after time.  Are you Stuck On Stupid?

God's Got Your Back When You Give Him Your Heart

Debra Roberts stated, "God's got your back when you give him your heart."  This is the lesson we learn repeatedly throughout the biblical text.  I believe David would agree the man for which the Bible declares was a man after God's own heart.  Do you remember when Saul seeked his life and he was on the run in the wilderness and God placed his arms of protection around him?  I am sure he will tell you that God's got your back when you give him your heart.

Then there is the narrative of Joshua who God tells to meditate on the Law of Moses day and night in other words give me your heart and I will be with you like I was with Moses in other words I will have your back.  Joshua went on to lead the children of Israel into the Promise Land and I am sure he would agree that God's got your back when you give him your heart.

So the question becomes what are you afraid?  What is God calling you to that you have not acted upon?  What are you waiting on?  Remember God's got your back when you give him your heart.

Using What You Have For The Glory Of God.

Judges 3:31 records the little known story of Shamgar.  Shamgar was what many scholars consider a minor prophet.  In fact there are only two verses that even mentions his name (Judges 3:31 and Judges 5:6).  That's right 42 words tell his story. Shamgar was an example of an individual of who simply used what he had for the glory of God. God was looking for someone who would stand up and defend his honor.  All of the Israelites were paralyzed with fear, but not Shamgar.

Shamgar decided despite what he did not have a sword or a shield he would use what he had for the glory of God!  He did not allow fear of the enemy to keep him from being used by God.  Shamgar could have made excuses but he decided to use what he had for the glory of God.  So he used his ox-goad and killed six hundred Philistines to deliver Israel.

This teaches us that God will give you the victory in whatever it is he is calling you to do if you are willing to use what you have for the glory of God!  Shamgar used his ox-goad!  The question becomes what is your ox-goad?  Will you use it for the glory of God?

A Hungry Man Is An Angry Man

As I was contemplating why people are so angry I came across this famous proverb and it became crystal clear to me. Hungry people are cranky!  Trust me I know I have firsthand experience and that's all I am at liberty to say if you know what I mean.  Honestly I discovered when I am hungry I tend to get agitated very easily.  I know you may be wondering what is this guy talking about?

Hunger is defined as the innate desire that every individual has to be in fellowship with God.  I have found when I don't spend time with God I am often not very pleasant to be around. When I am well-fed it is very difficult for me to become angry I am kinda like the individual James said everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Perhaps if we would take our cue from Jesus when he asked Peter if he loved him and Peter responded yes you know I love you.  Jesus response was FEED MY SHEEP.  The Word of God is a great way to fellowship with God because one of the ways God speaks is through His Word.

So the next time you find yourself getting angry feed your spiritual person with Word of God.  O taste and see that the Lord is good.

When It Rains It Pours

According Ad Age Advertising Century Morton Salt ranks number 9 on its list of top ten slogans of the century.  Their slogan you ask?  When It Rains It Pours and isn't that like life sometimes.  It seems like when it rains it pours.  I bet if you ask the folks on the east coast they would agree after experiencing a massive earthquake only to get news that a hurricane may be on the way. I bet if you asked David after he was confronted by Nathan and told that he would be publicly humiliated and that he would lose the child he made with Bathsheba he would say when it rain it pours. I bet if you asked Hagar after being obedient to her masters' she ends up in constant conflict and eventually told to leave the home she had become accustom to she would say when it rains it pours.

Here is the good news we serve a God that will be with us during the rain!  So when it rains grab an umbrella stand firm knowing that God will never leave you nor forsake you.

Failure is Success! Huh?

Malcolm Forbes made the statement, "Failure is success if we learn from it."  Often times when we fail to accomplish our goals we feel like a failure as opposed looking to what we can learn from our failures. Question becomes how do you view your failures?  If you keep on living you will have your share of failures but the key is to learn from them.  Here are a few examples of some people who learn from their failures:

  1. Peter failed to keep his promised to never deny Jesus but he learned that God is forgiving.
  2. Abraham failed the family test by sleeping with Hagar instead of waiting on the promise of God but he learn that God is faithful and always keeps his promises.
What have you learn from your failures?

Take A Shot

Wayne Gretzky said, "100% of the shots you don't take don't go in."  The question becomes are you afraid to take a shot?  What is God calling you do?  You know the people who are successful in God are those who take a shot. Abraham took a shot by leaving the land of Ur. Peter took a shot by leaving his occupation and family to follow Jesus. Joshua took a shot when he led the children of Israel into the Promise Land.

Here is a little secret a shot implies that there is a chance for failure but the good news is that when God is calling you to do something there is no failure!  Why?  Because there is no failure in God!  So Take A Shot!!

Are You Holding Us Back?

In sports no one wants to be the individual who is holding the team back.  Back from what you ask?  From the team accomplishing its goal whether it is to win the Superbowl or the NBA Finals.  No one wants to be the one who keeps the team from accomplishing its goal.  What if we approached Team Jesus with that same attitude?  What if everyone who was on the team did not want to be the individual to keep us from accomplishing our goal?  What is the goal? Well there are a several but here are a few:

  1. To preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every creature (Mark 16:15).
  2. To be One just as Christ and the Father are One (John 17:21-24).
I know what you are thinking?  My little sin is not holding back the entire body of Christ.  Well just ask Achan.  Whose Achan?  Achan's story is recorded in the book of Joshua chapter 7 and Achan is remembered as the guy who was holding Israel back.  Achan's actions affected the entire camp of Israel and God refuse to bless Israel because there was sin in the Israelite camp.  Achan was literally holding Israel back.

The question becomes are you holding Team Jesus back by your actions?

Put Up or Shut Up

We have all undoubtedly heard this saying and it is usually used in the context of an ultimatum. I say to you it’s time to PUT UP or SHUT UP.  God is calling for individuals to be living epistles to demonstrate that we operate according to heavenly promises and not earthly predictions.  God is calling for us to GIVE more when everything around us suggest we should give less.  I am not just talking about money as God is much bigger that one aspect of giving.  God is calling individuals to GIVE more love in a world that has become lovers of themselves.  God is calling individuals to GIVE more time in a world that has become obsessed with social media, reality TV, and PS3.

It's time to PUT UP or SHUT UP stop saying you love God more than anything but you give to any and everything but God i.e. your obsessions, wants, your habits, etc.  Here it is God is asking us to GIVE to the world what he gave to us HIS BEST!  Jesus is love, Jesus is peace, and ultimately Jesus is TRUTH!

Here's the TRUTH it is time to PUT UP or SHUT UP.  My brothers and sisters it is time to walk it out.  As you know it is more blessed to GIVE than to receive.

Never Make A Promise I Can't Keep

Dru Hill the legendary R&B/Pop group made this song famous  in 1997.  The claim that the song made was that the person would never make a promise that the person couldn't keep. This is a very admirable claim to make. Unfortunately we have all made promises that we have failed to keep in fact most relationships end because of broken promises.  Whether it is a sexual, church, or business relationship failure to keep one's word is a sure fire way to end a relationship.  Numbers 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceeded out of his mouth.   Even though we live in a world where one's word does mean much anymore our WORDS are important to God.  In fact the Bible says that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

So be careful of the promises you make because God is holding you responsible.  So never make a promise that you can't keep.

Why Sell Yourself Short Everybody Else Already Is?

Here is a little change up this morning.  My heart conviction this morning is related to self-esteem.  I don't know about you but I am tired of pessimistic Christians!  Sunday after Sunday, Tuesday after Tuesday, and Wednesday after Wednesday talking the Church lingo. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  If God before me who can be against me. Yet when you talk to them the first thing that comes out of their mouth is I wish I could do this or telling you why they can't do such and such!  Do you believe the lingo you speak or are they just words you are programed to say?  You have enough people hoping for your demise there is the adversary who would love to see you sell yourself short and of course your haters are just waiting for you to stumble.

Don't give either of them the satisfaction don't sell yourself short and here's why:

Henry Ford said," There isn't a person anywhere who isn't capable of doing more than he thinks he can."  The Good Book says as a man thinks so is he!  God thinks your GREAT when will you?

RAID kills bugs dead.

In 1966 RAID came out with the slogan kills bugs dead. This is an interesting concept the claim they make is that by spraying RAID it will kill bugs dead.  This infers that there are some products that only deter the presence of bugs but the bugs often return.  I know many of you don't have bugs in your home, however, just pretend that you do for a moment. The question becomes what BUGS (sins/unproductive habits) do you need to kill dead?  You see often time our BUGS have a way of of coming back.  The Word of God is like Raid it kills BUGS dead!!  In fact, the Word of God is Raid extra strength not only does it kills Bugs dead but it kills removes the very evidence that there were ever any BUGS there in the first place.  So take some time today and pick up some RAID.

She's A Brick House

The Commodores made this song famous in which they describe a woman whom they perceived to be the total package.  If you don't mind I would like to tell you about a lady I know. She is a "Brick House."  She is more precious than rubies she is a "Brick House."  Nothing you can desire can compare to her she is a "Brick House."  Her fruit is better than gold I am telling you she is a "Brick House."  She is precious in the sight of God I'm telling you she is a "Brick House."  She is to be sought out.  She can keep you from self-destruction.  Most of all she brings one favor from the Lord she is a "Brick House."  Whose that lady?  Lady Wisdom!

In my opinion Wisdom is the total package!  She is a "Brick House."

It’s not a Job. It’s an Adventure.

In the 1980s the U.S. Navy made this tagline popular.  The claim was that being a part of the U.S. Navy was not a job but an adventure.  We all know that the Navy travels all around the world so they were proposing that one change their perspective on how they viewed the U.S. Navy.  As Christians sometimes we can feel like being a Christian is a job.  The pressures to be an example, to share one's faith, to give one's time, and to strive for perfection can seem as demanding has one's job.

I would like to propose to you that being a Christian is not a job.  It's an Adventure.  It's an adventure that one takes developing an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.  On the adventure you will learn that God is faithful, God is good, God is a comforter, God is a healer, God is love, but perhaps most importantly you will learn that God is always present!

Being a Christian is not a job but it is an adventure that allows us to go out to the uttermost parts of the earth and share/demonstrate the love that was shared with us.

God's Residue

In this world where we are dependent on foreign oil we are constantly trying to find alternative fuel sources.  Recently I worked on a Statement Of Work soliciting a contract for Corn Stover and Other Crop Residues. Crop Residues are those things that are left in the field after the harvest of a crop. Research is being done to assess the viability of these residues as an alternative energy source.  This got me to thinking about the God I serve.  I know most of you are thinking of the command that God gave in Deuteronomy 24:20 amongst other places to leave what was not harvested to the widows and orphans.

The question becomes what does God's residue look like?  God's residue is when you are blessed just by the fact you are connected to someone who is blessed!  God's residue is when you are not asking God for anything but you receive everything just because you are abiding in Him and He in you!

I don't know about you but God I gladly accept your residue!

We Brings Good Things To Life

General Electric has a slogan that says, "We bring good things to life."  That's an interesting saying and undoubtedly they perhaps do bring some useful things to life.  I know you are saying Trell it's just a slogan but words are powerful and if you allow slogans to fester in your Spirit you might just start to believe it.  Marketing and advertising is design for the purpose of manipulating the sub-conscious mind.   The Bible says that every good and perfect gift come from above!   This just a simple reminder to remember who is the source from which all blessings flow.  God is the source that brings good things to life.  In fact there is no life apart from God.

Built For The Road Ahead

Ford Motor Company made the slogan, "Built For The Road Ahead," popular. The claim Ford was making is that they had equipped these vehicles to handle whatever a perspective driver could possible put these vehicles through.  Here's a light bulb moment for you I submit to you this morning that is what God is trying to do in your life.  James declares that are trials develop patience and to let patience have her perfect work in you that would perfect lacking nothing! In other words God is saying I am just building you for the road ahead via the trials you experience!  So today don't fret over your predicaments and/or circumstances just tell yourself  I am being BUILT FOR THE ROAD AHEAD!  Paul didn't trip off of being thrown in jail, nor did he trip off of being shipwrecked he just said, "I am BEING BUILT FOR THE ROAD AHEAD."  Be encouraged today because God has equipped you with His Spirit which gives you what you need to overcome so that you can say, I am BUILT FOR THE ROAD AHEAD!

Don’t get mad. Get GLAD.

This morning I thought I would use one of my favorite slogans.  Don't get mad. Get GLAD.  I remember as a young boy watching these commercials. However as I am now older I can see the deeper meaning in this simple slogan.  I believe it is what Paul was getting at in 1 Thessalonians 5:16 when he was giving his final instructions to the church.  He instructed them to rejoice always!  Paul was not saying be happy about terrible things that happen but he was saying Don't Get Mad. Get GLAD.  You ask what is there to Get GLAD about when terrible things are happening? The term rejoice has a deeper meaning it means to have a joyful acknowledgment.  Joyful acknowledgment is the recognition that trouble doesn't last always.  Joyful acknowledgment is the recognition that weeping may endure for a night but JOY comes in the morning. Rejoicing depends not on your circumstances but depends on a joyful acknowledgement of who is in control of your circumstances.

P.S. Grandma said, "Dogs get mad people get angry!"  Don't get mad. Get GLAD!

"The Pause That Refreshes"

In 1929 Coca Cola came out with a wonderful slogan it said, "The pause that refreshes."  This simple yet profound slogan spoke to me this morning.  It is so easy to get caught up with the mundane activities that a day can bring that by noon day you are spent.  For most of us it doesn't even take that long.  We find ourselves in need of a pick me upper. What I like about the God I serve is every time I take a moment to pray I am refreshed!  Every time I take a moment to read His word I am refreshed!  Every time I take a moment to praise His name I am refreshed!  So today if you need a pick me up focus your attention on God. I promise not only is it the pause that refreshes but it is the pause that transforms as well!

Because I'm Worth It

L'Oréal is an international cosmetics empire but they interestingly have a slogan that I feel speaks to the heart of Christians.  Their slogan is "Because I'm Worth It."  If a survey was taken amongst those who profess faith in Jesus Christ you would be appalled at the number of people who don't know their worth.  People who feel that they have nothing to offer or who feel that they are worthless.  You may be a lot of things according to the people of this world and maybe even according to yourself or your family but that's not how God sees you.  RIGHT NOW! I need you to change the way you think!  Ask yourself a few questions.   If I am worthless would Jesus have come down from his position in glory for me?  If I am worthless would Jesus have endured the pain, agony, suffering, and humiliation of the cross for me?  Ultimately if I am worthless would Jesus had commended His Spirit to the Father and die a criminal's/sinner's death for me? The question becomes why would Jesus the Christ do those things for me? Because I'm Worth It!

As the songwriter says sometimes you have to encourage yourself in the Lord!  How do you that?  By speaking the Word over your life!  What God's says about you not what you think about yourself or what people may think about you!  The Bible says I am a joint-heir wit Christ,  the Bible says I am royalty, and the Bible says I am chosen of God and dearly loved. You are valuable in God's sight and you have a valuable contribution to make to this world!  So just know that God chose you and saved BECAUSE YOU ARE WORTH IT.

Do More

I know you may be thinking what is our slogan for today?  Well here it is "Do More" this slogan was made famous by American Express. The premise of the claim made by American Express is that with this card you can do more than you expected. Shouldn't that be our mindset as believers? Isn't that what our Christ did?  When the woman was caught in adultery not only did he preserve her life but did he not restore as well?  When the wine ran out at the celebration not only did he provide more wine but did he not provide the best wine that had ever been tasted?  Christ specialized in doing more than what was expected and so should we!  The question becomes how will you take advantage of the opportunities to do more than what is expected of you?  Here are a few subtle ways to do more:

  1. If there is a person who you only casually speak to DO MORE by taking the extra time take interest in how they are REALLY doing.
  2. If you have been volunteering at a place once a month for an hour per visit DO MORE by spending an extra half hour just to show you care.
Remember it is little things like this that makes a big difference in your witness for Christ.  I exhort you today in whatever area you can to DO MORE than is expected!

Reach Out And Touch Someone

Reach out and touch someone is undoubtedly an infamous phrase.  Some of you may be familiar with because this phrase is the tagline for AT&T.  Many of you may be familiar with the idea because of Diana Ross's infamous song, "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand."  1 John 3:18 states let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.  For me the writer is simply saying reach out and touch someone.  As believers we have become so accustomed to saying we love everybody but we very seldom show it.  One interesting thing about the Johannine Writings is that almost everywhere you see the word truth you can substitute Christ and the text doesn't lose its meaning.  This is because for this community CHRIST is TRUTH. The question becomes what does it look like to reach out and touch someone?  Here are a few practical examples:

  1. Hold the elevator for someone.  Though seemingly small in a cruel world it doesn't go unnoticed.
  2. Helping someone carry heavy items.  Though seemingly small it demonstrates concern in a world for which concern is lost.
There are countless other seemingly small things we can to reach out and touch individuals.  Ask your spouse or boo and they will tell you it is the little things that count.  Believe it or not that applies to our witness for Christ.  So what will you do to reach out and touch someone today?

God Made Me

As I woke up this morning I could not get this song out of my Spirit, "God Made Me."  It goes on to say God made me who I am. Psalms 139:14 is the biblical affirmation of this claim the Psalmist declared,  "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."  In a world that often makes us feel that we are inadequate.  Whether it is because we are not a size 4 or whether we have not obtain a certain financial and/or social status we can begin to feel inadequate.  Thusly, we begin to become DISCONTENT with God's creation because we don't look like the world says we should or have the things the world says we should have.  Then there are those little imperfections we have. Whether we may catch onto things a little slower than others, whether we have a speech impediment, or whether we have a heart murmur.  We begin to become DISCONTENT with our various imperfections and ultimately with God's creation.  I don't know the particular source of your DISCONTENTMENT but the question becomes if God made me who I am why am I discontent?  If I am fearfully and wonderfully made why am I DISCONTENT?

The simple answer is this our eyes are not God eyes when we can only see what we are are not, what we don't have, and/or our imperfections we are looking in the NATURAL.  I came by to encourage you this morning that God is a Spirit and in order for you to see yourself as God sees you one must move from NATURAL to the SPIRITUAL.  In order to embrace how God has made you one has to first understand how God sees you.  You see God sees you as the head and not the tail,  God sees you as above and not beneath, God sees you as the apple of His eye, God sees you as royal priesthood, God sees you a priceless jewel, and God sees you His child!  God has made you holy!  God has made you who are so EMBRACE who you are in HIM!  When you do you can say like the Psalmist I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

We Answer To A Higher Authority

This morning as I was looking at the Advertising Slogan Hall of Fame I came across an interesting slogan "We answer to a higher authority."  I said to myself I do too! Scali, McCabe & Sloves the creators of Hebrew National brand in 1975 promoted this slogan.  Now I will be the first to admit that I know nothing about 1975 other than "Soul Train," afros, and bell bottoms as I was not even born yet.  However I do think that this is still a powerful slogan.  As Christians we do answer to a higher authority but what I like about this our authoritative figure is HE is so WONDERFUL. The question becomes what does it mean that we answer to a higher authority?  Here are a few thoughts:

  1. It means we can't respond the way we want to respond.  When someone upset us we cannot use foul language towards them or cause them bodily harm. Why?  Because we answer to a higher authority!
  2. It means we can't do everything that everyone else does.  We can't go to certain places because it may cause others to stumble or we can't spend all money on our heart desires. Why? Be we answer to a higher authority!
  3. It means we can't say one thing and do another. Why? Because we answer to a higher authority!
The Bible declares that each of us shall give account of himself to God.  So today I encourage us to live our lives as if we answer to a higher authority!

You Stink! Thank You

I know what you are thinking where is Trell going with this one?  Our subject for today is cow manure!  Yes cow manure!  As Christians we are to give off a fragrance. How we smell depends on our faithfulness in devotion with God and obedience to God's commands.  Sin in our lives causes us to stink!  Though we strive to be sinless we are fallible creatures who often found ourselves falling short of the glory of God.  So the question becomes if we give off a fragrance and sin is stinky yet we often found ourselves in it what are we to do?  Then the Lord said, "Cow Manure,"  I said cow manure?  He said just because it stinks doesn't mean it is not USEFUL or PRODUCTIVE!   You see cow manure add organic matter, which helps soil retain moisture and structure which prevents compaction, and helps prevent nutrients from leaching away.  Even though it stinks it is still USEFUL and PRODUCTIVE!

This morning I stopped by to encourage you that even though you have some sin in your life and your fragrance may not be Calvin Klein Obsession you are still USEFUL for the purposes of the Kingdom.  You can still be PRODUCTIVE!  Even though Noah was a drunk he was used by God.  Even though Jacob was a trickster he was used by God.   I thank God for using stinky ole me and guess what God can use you too!

Sesame: A Crop That's Just Like Me

Sesame is a crop that produces a seed that can be either eaten or crush for oil. I know many of you are more familiar with the mustard seed however the concept is much the same.  The sesame seed is also a very small seed.  The sesame crop is interesting because it is very drought tolerant and can survive some very difficult conditions (RESILIENT).  The sesame crop even though seemingly insignificant by the masses is over $1 billion dollar industry worldwide.  So what are you getting at?  We are like the sesame seed we can either be an instrument of praise or a letter for Christ.  Even though our lives at times can seem insignificant to the masses if we win just one soul for Christ is worth more than $1 billion dollars in fact if is priceless.

The key to the having a successful sesame crop is getting a stand up. Once the stand is up it is almost impossible for the crop not to yield a harvest.  For us as Christians when we equip ourselves with the full armor of God we can then STAND and because we have the armor of God it should be impossible for us not to bear the fruit.

Are you like sesame?  Are you resilient?  Can you STAND firm in Christ despite adverse conditions that occur in your life?  Will you allow how you are viewed to effect the impact you will make on the world? Or will you be like the sesame crop be a SURVIVOR?

So Close Yet So Far

Aaron Hall formerly of the group, "Guy,"  had a smash hit in the 90's entitled, "I Miss You."  Aaron in this song is pouring out his heart to a woman.  I recently had one of the moments not with a woman but with God.  As a seminary student and a minister of Gospel I always find myself in the Word of God.  However just because you are in the Word of God doesn't mean you are in fellowship with God.  Often my purposes are to write an exegesis paper, write a bible study, or sermon.  It is easy to get so caught with attending to the needs of others that you forsake your own needs.  I had one of those light bulb moments and I said that is it Quintrell you are so close yet so far.  I said to myself, "God I Miss You."  I miss the conversations, I miss the way you make me feel,  I miss the guidance, but most of all I just miss you!

I submit to you this morning that often times we find ourselves in similar situations to the one I just shared.  So close to getting to the next level in God yet so far because you are not willing to sacrifice your comforts for what you need.  So close to getting the healing you need yet so far because you won't forgive that individual.  So close to getting the financial breakthrough you need yet so far because you have not demonstrated you can be a good steward over what you have.

What are you so close yet so far from ________?  I shared with you what I had been dealing with.  I am happy to report that I am drawing nigh unto Him and according to His Word he will draw nigh unto me!

When People Show You Who They Are, Believe Them

This quote was made famous by Maya Angelou and it sounds like one of those quotes you hear in church that sound like scripture.  For example when praises go up blessings come down or cleanliness is next to godliness.  However, it is what we would call a truism which is simply something that is an undoubted or self- evident truth. We hold fast to these truisms because they are things we affirm as truth.   So let's look at this quote for a moment.  I submit to you this morning based on my experiences that this is a truism.  Can people change?  Of course! The Bible attests to that Saul changed from persecutor to Paul being one that was persecuted.  People can change.

However much of the hurt and pain that we experience comes from not believing that this quote is truth.  We spend much of our lives trying to change or persuade people who are what they are.  Though this realization can be painful it would be wise to believe those people when they show you who they are.  I will not delve to various types of disappointments this morning as my goal was simply to raise your awareness of this truism.  I will leave it up to you to fill in the ________________.  What have people shown you about themselves?  Do you believe them?

Before, I quit this morning I can hear DeLano saying Q the better question is what are we as those who profess faith in Christ showing the world?  Thanks DeLano that is a good question because what does the condition of the world say about what they believe about our witness for Christ.  The Bible declares that we are living epistles or letters of recommendation.  What does your recommendation say about Christ?

Purell: Kill The Germs In Your Life

Many of you may be familiar with Purell if you are not it is simply an instant hand sanitizer.  Purell makes the claim that it kills 99.99% of germs. My hope is that most of us use hand sanitizer whether it is Purell or not.  My claim for this morning is simple.  The Word of God has the same function in our lives it kills all of the germs (i.e. sins, doubts). If I may I would like to borrow a phrase from Minister Natalie Keys take a "Word Bath."  We must wash are ourselves in the Word of God.  Once we do this we become sanitize and then we can be used for the edification of the Kingdom!  The Word says if we confess our sins He is just and faithful forgive us of our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteous (SANITIZE)!  Have you had your Word Bath today?  Are you SANITIZE?

Obey Your Thirst

I am on a mission to literally take every possible thing that this world has to offer and use it for the glory of God.  With that being said you may have heard the popular slogan "Obey Your Thirst." This slogan has been made famous by Sprite.  Little did they know that they were speaking to generations of believers.  Every time you drink a can or bottle of  Sprite you are obeying their command.  Though the Bible doesn't use this exact terminology it is implied in the biblical text. John 7:37 says on the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  This is Jesus exhortation to you to obey your thirst.  Let me just say I am not anti-Sprite I am just pro Jesus.  I do pray the next time you drink a can of Sprite it will be accompanied with time spent in the Word of God.  The question becomes whose command are you going to obey?!

Just One Taste

Do you like Lay's potato chips?  I going to presume that the answer would be yes. Remember I didn't ask you if you were on a diet and choose not to eat them.  I am asking all other things held equal do you like Lay's potato chips? Yes, is the safe assumption for about 99% of us.  I am country boy and I believe that Golden Flake makes the best potato chips.  Where my people from the Southeast at?  The point is this Lay's makes the claim that I bet you can't eat just one!  There presumption is if you eat one chip that you will innately desire another chip.

Perhaps one of my favorite passages of scripture is Psalms 34.  In particular Psalms 34:8 where it says taste and see that the Lord is Good. I submit to you today if you read one verses you will have that same innate desire to read another verse.  Verses are like potato chips in a sense because you can't read just one and get the substance you need.  Just as you have to eat chip after chip to become somewhat satisfied you need verses after verse to somewhat satisfy your spiritual hunger.

So today try just one verse I bet you can't read just one!

In world full of smart phones and applications it is easy to get caught up in the endless applications. You can find yourself spending hours downloaded them and then figuring out how to apply them.  I submit to you this morning that the Ultimate Application is Christ Emulation.  That is to say that the best use of your time is to emulate Christ.  In order to apply this application to your life you have to spend time downloading His Word into your heart and mind.  The interesting thing about this application is that instead of having to figuring out how to apply it  comes with a special feature that guides and directs you!

So today take some time and download the latest application it never goes out of style and is always relevant because it is the only application that is alive!

Welcome to the Good Life

Kanye West made a song a while ago entitled, "The Good Life," for the Christian we can transpose that to mean the abundant life.  The one the thing about the abundant life is that it is full of blessings.  Opportunities are nothing more than potential possibilities that God grants for us to blessed. We all start out with a Jeremiah 29:11 blessing over our life.  No, I am not here to tell you that the road will be easy actually the context of the chapter suggest anything but that. The point is that God has a good plan to bless you and in fact God delights in blessing you.  There some blessings that are no strings attached i.e. waking you up, activity of your limbs, and being placed in your right mind.  However the abundant life blessings requires a couple things:

  1. Obedience unlocks the abundant life blessings.  When you are obedient God will unlock blessings that you will not believe.  Trust me I learn this lesson the hard way!
  2. Faithfulness unlocks the abundant life blessings.  When you are faithful to God he will be faithful to you. Faithfulness is a magnet for God's blessings.
The motivation for obedience nor faithfulness should not be to be blessed as God cannot be manipulated and can discern one's heart.  These two things are like a key is to a door they give you access to blessings.  So what are you going to do the next time opportunity (potential to be bless) knocks at your door? If you answer it with obedience and faithfulness God will respond by saying, “Welcome to the Good Life.”

Favor Ain't Fair

This infamous phrase was made famous by the now infamous Bishop Eddie Long.  What's interesting is I submit to you that it is biblical.  Let's just take a brief look at the opening verses of Malachi where the Lord says Jacob I have loved but Esau I have hated. In other words without getting to far into a theological disputation the text is literally suggesting that God has favored Jacob or Esau.  If you research the history between the Jacob and Esau though many have speculated to the reasons God has favored Jacob there is no biblical indication.  In fact one would think of the two brothers God would favor Esau the elder brother and his father's favorite but God decided to favor Jacob. Jacob the liar and trickster.  That reveals to us a couple of things about God's favor:

  1. God's favor is not based upon what you do.  If I could testify  for a moment I know I am not all that I should be or even completely obedient to God's will and yet God blesses me.  All I can say is favor ain't fair.
  2. God's favor is unexplainable.  If I could testify for a moment I can't explain why God has provided me with the opportunities that he has.  All I can say is favor ain't fair.
Now the question becomes how do you know that you are Jacob not Esau.  It is simple Jacob fathered Judah who ended up with the royal scepter that eventually led to David on down to forty and two generations to the birth of Jesus The Christ.  Who God who so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son (Jesus) that whosoever believe in Him can become apart of the royal lineage.

So What

So what you go to church?  The question is  are you being the church?  So what you pay your tithes.  The question is are you giving out of obligation or is it a form of worship?  So what you profess you are a Christian.  The question is does the world look at you and see Christ?  The question of so what is often a neglected question in life but it is one of the most critical questions one must ask one's self.  So what does so what reveal to us?   Here are a few suggestions:

  1. The question of so what forces us to evaluate our actions.  Without asking this question we can easily fall to the trap of complacency.  For example, our mind often allows us to believe that just because we are doing Christian things going to church, paying tithes, etc. that we are pleasing God.   So what however asks are you visiting the sick, neglected, and feeding the poor.
  2. The question of so what forces us to focus on attention to on our purpose.  There have been many of books written about being purpose driven individuals.  There have being several books written about being intentional in your actions.  So what asks how does your life either influence someone to come to Christ or either edify the body of Christ.
So I say to you this morning so what God woke you up this morning.  So what God started you on your way.  So what asks how you  are going to live your life as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto God.  By the way it's the least you could do!

Transitions of Life

Life is all about transition.  Yet, transition is the one thing that people seem to struggle with the most.  What is interesting is most of the biblical models we have to follow were transitional people.  For example, one of the first transitional characters we meet in the biblical text is Abram from the land of Ur.  Abram was told to leave his homeland and go to a land unknown but a land that God would show him.

  1. Abram teaches us that transition requires us to leave our comfort zones and trust God to be our comfort.
Another example of dealing with transiton can be found in the life of Saul of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible).  Saul is an example of how not to deal with the transition.  Saul went from one the smallest tribe of the nation of Israel to king, but he could not handle the transition from kingship.

  1. Saul teaches us that transition requires humility and willingness to accept change even if it not a change we agree with.
Life is full of transitions how we deal with these transitions will reveal our true character.  It was revealed that Abram was a man of faith and it was revealed that Saul was prideful man.  What will the transitions of life reveal about you?

Listening vs. Hearing

There is a fundamental difference between listening and hearing.  Nowhere is this distinction more prominent than as it relates to the Word of God.  Think about it most individuals have gone to church countless times yet they still lack faith. What's interesting is that you use your ears to do both whether it be listening or hearing.  The reason that many of us struggle with our faith because the enemy doesn't care how much we listen to the Word as long as we don't hear the Word.  You see faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.  You see hearing implies that one responds to what they hear.  This response is more than just listening to what was said but actually implementing what was said into practical application in your daily life.  What interesting is sometimes overlooked is the tense that hearing is found in.  The tense suggest that it is a continuous thing not a one time thing.  The tense suggest that the more you hear (respond) to the Word of God the more your faith grows.

Early this morning I downloaded an application that I am praying will help me to grow in my faith. The opportunity will be there it will be up to me to respond.  It is the GoBible application as I sleep I will be hearing the Word of God and the plan is to respond  to the Word the next day in practical implication in my daily life.  Would you take that challenge with me?  Let's saturate our minds with the Word of God that we can answer the call to be doers of the word.

The 21st Century Limited Good: Time

The most precious commodity that an individual has is time.  What makes time so precious is the fact that once you give it you can't get it back. We live in a world where time is a limited resource but there are countless demands for our time.  Life in a the ministry presents many difficulties of how to manage this precious commodity both efficiently and effectively.  Time so little of it yet so much to do with it. Time the 21st Century limited good.  Perhaps this is why people are so upset when they are in a relationship and it doesn't work out the first thing they say is "I wasted my time."   Time so precious that we live in the time where if a local church doesn't show sensitivity to this precious commodity they lose membership.  Time the excuse that we often use when we failed to fellowship with God.  We say I just don't have the time!  I would like to suggest to you a few things that this precious commodity reveals about us:

  1. Time reveals to us what we deem important!  In other words time shows us where our priorities lie.
  2. Time reveals to us where are inefficiencies lie.  In other words time shows us the things in our lives we are either devoting to much time to or those things we are not devoting enough time to.
The question becomes what does your time say about relationship with God?  What does your time say about your priorities?  Time and money are directly correlated in a lot of ways but one obvious way is in priorities.  Show me where you spend your money and I will show where your heart is!  Show me where you spend your time and I will show you where your heart is!  The Good Book declares that there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.  What do you with this 21st Century limited good?

Uggh!

Have you ever been frustrated?  The obvious answer is YES!  How did you deal with that frustration?  Probably not according to the will of God right!  I mean you knew what the right thing to do was but in that moment of frustration you lashed out and lost control. No worries it happens to the best of them.  Moses whose testimony is that he is the most humble and meekest man to walk the face of the earth lost control.  Yahweh gave him specific instructions as it related to the rock but in a moment of frustration he struck the rock twice and disobeyed Yahweh.  So you see you are not the first person to be frustrated but let's look at a benefit and consequence of frustration.

  1. A moment of frustration can cause you to reevaluate your situation and in some cases avoid going down a path that leads to more frustration.
  2. A moment of frustration can cause you to miss out on a blessing that God had in store for you (i.e. Moses).
So this emotion that we all have experienced, will experienced, or are experiencing can be both a blessing and curse it is up to you decide which one!  Let us learn a lesson from this great man of God and respond to our frustrations properly.

What Happens If Pain Cause You To Give Up?

Pain is unfortunately apart of life.  So I begin to wander what would happen if people allowed the pain they experienced to cause them to give up?  Immediately I thought about the pain that the early church experienced what would of happen if they had given up because of the pain?  Take the Apostle Paul for instance what if he gives up have being beaten with the thirty-nine lashes save one five times?  What if he had given up after being beaten with rods three times?  What if he had allowed the pain he experienced to cause him to give up on God's purpose for his existence?  I hear you that say well God would just find someone else to do it.  Perhaps that is a valid claim, however, Paul's mission or purpose was just that Paul's purpose no one else was uniquely gifted to accomplish this mission.  The question then becomes what have you allowed pain to cause you to give up on?

Let's take Christ for example what if he had allowed the pain of the cross to cause him to give up?  In this case you can't argue that God would just find someone else.   What would our lives be like if Christ had given up?  Unimaginable!  Paul and Christ didn't give up for the same reasons because they knew their purposes and their love for God, God's creation, and God's will!   Paul and Christ have been impacting the lives of indiviudals for over a 1000 years.  The question becomes what impact on the lives of others are you forsaking by your unwillingness to press through your pain into God's purpose for your life?

The Empire Is Falling

Throughout history there has been great empires.  You may be familiar with the biblical empires of Egypt, Persia, Rome, and Babylonia.  No one really considered Israel to be an empire because it was small only about the size of the state of New Jersey but what is interesting is all the things that this little nation was able to accomplish. The secret to their success was that Israel had a divine warrior on their side.  Yahweh would fight their battles for them which would allow them to prevail against their various enemies.  Israel was a God fearing nation.

This is the claim that use to be made about the U.S.A. which was believe to be a Christian nation founded upon Christian principles.  However this once Christian nation declares that it is politically incorrect to say the name of Jesus the Christ in public or to end a prayer in Jesus name.  They have taken prayer out of schools and gay marriages are endorsed by our nation's president.  What has happen to this once Christian nation?

As you can see we are facing the worst economic downturn of all time and the earth is continuously groaning at all the sin that has run rapid with this once Christian nation.  Yes the great world power and empire of the U.S.A. is falling and now not only is the U.S.A. dependent on the middle east for oil but on China for finances.

As Christians we are warn to be watchful for you know not when the Son of Man will return!  Are you paying attention? The earth is groaning and God is speaking. Are you listening?  Today is a good day to share your faith in Jesus Christ or to restore right fellowship with him!

The Penalty of Selfishness

One of the biggest stumbling blocks in walking in the Spirit or living a fruitful Christian life is selfishness.  Selfishness ruins churches as those who have the ability to help others refrain because they want to keep their sense of importance. Families split because of selfishness one individual feels they are not getting to make any decisions or getting enough attention etc. Selfishness causes individuals to neglect the responsibility to help others in need.  There is undoubtedly a little selfishness in all of us, but we are to be givers as it is more blessed to give than to receive.  Not giving necessarily of our money but of our talents, treasures, and our time.

A farmer inherited a rice field.  The first year, the water covered his land so well that he had an abundant harvest.  In fact, it even overflowed into his neighbor's field, making it fertile also.  But he began to fret because his neighbor's field became as productive as his own.  He decided that the water was part of his inheritance and belonged exclusively to him, so he cut it off from his neighbor's field the next year.  The result? His own field was flooded and his crop ruined.

The moral of the story is this selfishness ultimately leads to one's demise.  Selfishness can be cured by walking in the Spirit and considering others needs above your own.  Thank God for the Word that gives us resolutions to our problems!

Disunity

I am "Disunity."

When biological brothers and sisters can't get along  I am there.

When brothers and sisters in Christ can't get along I am there.

I am "Disunity."

When marriages fall apart and divorce is the resolution I am there.

When churches disband over trivial issues I am there.

I am "Disunity."

When Democrats and Republicans can't agree on the basics I am there.

When the U.S. is at war with other nations I am there.

I am "Disunity."

When fathers and children are at war with one another I am there.

When mothers and daughters are at war with one another I am there.

I am "Disunity."

Disunity is the one thing that is prevalent both in the secular world and the community of faith.  We are called to oneness!  Today in your circles of influence take a step towards unity!

I Like You Alot

The question came up can't I just like a person do I have to love them?  Now the simple answer is just no you have to love them.  However, we all know that life is not that simple and the truth is we really just like people when we think about it.  You see "like" doesn't require any commitment in other words "like" is conditional.  You see when you "like" someone and they disappoint you "like" can walk away.  You see when you "like" someone and they don't like you back "like" can walk away.  When you "like" a church and something changes that you don't like then "like" can walk away. You see "like" is temporary while love is eternal.

Therefore, Jesus gives his disciples the commandment to love!  Love is the requirement that the world may know that we are his disciples it is by our love for one another.  The question becomes why is this command is given?  The answer is simple because Christ knew that love doesn't make since.  Let me show you the difference and I will quit.  The Bible declares what profit is it to love those who love you does not even the sinner does that.  I submit to you that is what "like" looks like!  Love however loves those who hates them, love is patient, and love is still there when you are hurt or disappointed.  Love is unconditional and peculiar and this type of love is not our own but it belongs to the Spirit of God that is gifted to each believer.

For the believer I like you alot just won't cut it.

The Curse of First

As individuals we have this innate desire to be first.  We often say things like no one was listening to this type of music until I started to listen to it or no one was wearing this type of clothing until I started wearing it.  To my fellows back in the day to be the first one to get the girl, but I am equal opportunity type of guy some ladies had that same mindset. To be the first is embedded in us.  However, the desire to be first can be a dangerous thing.  The desire to be first can cause us to become manipulative as our only desire is to be first.  The desire to be first can cause us to be cold and bitter towards others in our attempt to be first.

This is not a new desire as it was around in antiquity I am reminded us the disciples who debating who would be the greatest in other words who would be in first place or the number one position. What is the interesting is that this desire often leads to the most pain.  Once one makes it into that first position they discover that it is lonely at the top.  They discover that everyone is targeting their spot and there is no love for those at the top.  It actually becomes an undesirable position.  So remember this if you humbled yourself under the mighty hand of God and God exalts you in due time and it happens to be the number one position it is then the desired position.

Created to Create

There are many attributes we have for God but one we often neglect is Creator.  The Bible itself begins with in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  So since we often are not aware of the creativity of God we fail to recognize the creative abilities we have within ourselves. God's creativity is evident throughout the earth and the universe.  The Bible declares that we are created in his image and his likeness. I recognize that everyone doesn't have artistic ability heck I don't but do you have creative power within you.

You have the power to walk in the room and create a positive atmosphere.  You have the power to take situation that has no hope and create a sense of hope.  You have the ability to take an individual who have been cast aside and create an atmosphere of restoration by embracing them.  You have the ability to be a co-creator with God.  I believe that this is the heart of the message in Ephesians were it is written that we are created in Christ Jesus to do good works.  We are created to create not the latest fashion trend, gadget, or fad but good works!

Saved Me

There are times in your life where the only thing that you are going to be able asked of God is to save you.  These are the times you find yourself in after you tried to do things your own way and you find yourself in a  tough predicament. You are on your knees and the only thing you can cry is God save me. The question becomes what is God saving you from?  If we are honest most of the time God is saving us from ourselves.  Yes, ourselves because we think we know what's best for us better than God.   So how do we avoid these saved me moments?  Are these moments unavoidable?  I will acknowledge right now that even if you adhere to these few little principles you can still find yourself in those "Save Me" predicaments but here are a few suggestions:

  1. Surrender your will for God's will meaning in every decision consider the godly implications.
  2. Be aware of the signs God provides before you arrive in those "Save Me" predicaments.
We have all experienced those save me moments in our lives much like Peter did when he attempted to walk on the water and begin to sink.  Just like Jesus was there to save Peter he is also there to save you!
